Sports minister Rajyavardhan Rathore on Monday stressed on the fact that he wants to see India become a sports equipment manufacturing hub for the world. Addressing a confluence of international and national delegates from various sporting federations, leagues and companies, Rathore emphasised the need to change the mindset of the country and the federation towards sports. “Nothing like sports that breaks all barriers across regions, race or creed. We plan to make India a force to reckon with in the field of sports and need support from private sector,” the minister told reporters.

Sports Goods Manufacturing Industry in India originated on 13th April, 1883 at Sialkot (Now in Pakistan). Sardar Ganda Singh Oberoi founded Oberoi Limited in Sialkot on 13th April 1883. Sports Equipment became the first Indian Industrial Product to be exported in 1885. India’s sports goods industry is 135 years old and has flourished, driven by a skilled workforce. Being labour-intensive in nature, the industry provides employment to more than 500,000 people. India’s sporting goods are popular around the world and have made a mark in the global sports goods market. The domestic industry exports nearly 60 per cent of its total output.

In the occasion of the 135th Anniversary of Indian SPORTS GOODS MANUFACTURING INDUSRTY, Sports & Management Research Institute (SMRI), the first sports management and sports engineering institute in India and the SPORTS HUB, Trivandrum join together to accomplish a great dream, “MAKING KERALA SPORTS SUPERPOWER.”

Kerala is having a great legacy in sports and considered as a major hub of sports. But, with respect to the core areas of sports industry such as sports goods manufacturing, sports retailing, sports infrastructure and sporting events, Kerala is trailing behind many other places in the country. If the different stakeholders of sports can work together, Kerala is a perfect landscape for the fast growing sports industry and it is the best time to start a new innings in Kerala Sports.

SMRI & the SPORTS HUB work together to achieve the following objectives to make Kerala a real sports superpower.

  • Making Kerala a SPORTS GOOD MANUFACTURING HUB
  • Strengthening the SPORTS RETAILING in Kerala
  • Explore the SPORTS TOURISM opportunities in Kerala
  • Enhance the quality of Kerala’s SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE
  • Creating professional SPORTS PROPERTIES in Kerala for employment and revenue generation

To realize the above mentioned objectives, we initiate different activities. Details of the activities will be published soon!!
